How are nursing homes and assisted living different?

Finding the best fit for your loved one.

If you’re considering assisted living communities and/or nursing home options, you’ll want to become familiar with all types of senior care available in order to find the ideal fit for you and your loved one.  The key is learning about each individual community and what it has to offer – then determining what best fits the unique needs of your loved one and your family. The Spires at Berry College offers independent living residents the unique opportunity to take advantage of our full continuum of care – meaning residents continue living at The Spires whether assisted living, memory care or skilled nursing and rehabilitation is ever needed.

Senior care options.

What is Assisted Living?

Assisted living is a type of residential community for seniors providing living quarters, support services and health care and is designed to help individuals who need support with their day-to-day routines. These services customarily include a combination of meals, laundry, housekeeping, medication management and assistance with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting and mobility as needed. Residents in assisted living communities generally have their own apartment with access to community spaces for dining and activities.

What is a Nursing Home?

A nursing home provides around-the-clock skilled care for individuals requiring assistance for most or all ADLs. Generally, this category of residential care for seniors is considered to be one step below hospital acute care. Because residents of nursing home communities typically have high care needs and complex medical conditions, these communities offer medical care by trained medical staff, such as a registered nurse or therapist, 24 hours a day. Life-enriching activities are usually included, along with meals for various dietary needs.

What is a Life Plan community?

With Life Plan benefits at The Spires, residents have the assurance that their future health care needs are covered and their assets protected from any unexpected rise in healthcare costs. Our continuum of care provides highly specialized settings all on one campus so residents can age in place. Like most Life Plan communities, residents pay an upfront entrance fee and an ongoing monthly fee in exchange for an array of services and amenities as well as priority access to healthcare services. Residents are able to transition from independent living to assisted living, memory care or skilled nursing as their care needs change over time.

We understand that finding the right option that meets your loved one’s needs is an important part of keeping them healthy, engaged and fulfilled. In every level of care at The Spires, each resident receives the quality care and experience that’s right for them.
