When is it time to move to an assisted living community?

Common signs more support is needed for you or a loved one.

How do you know whether the time is right for you or a loved one to move to an assisted living community? It’s a situation faced by many families with so many variables to consider – but also certain signs to watch out for as you weigh your options. Here are some common indications that assisted living would be a good fit:

  • Worsening health problems – Has your loved one’s declining health started to become difficult to keep up with for you or for them? Now may be the time to partner with a team of professionals who are dedicated to their well-being. In assisted living, caregivers provide help with bathing, dressing, medication management and other activities of daily living, as well as nursing support.
  • Increased isolation – Do you see your loved one becoming more isolated due to memory loss, hearing impairment or mobility issue? Isolation is a risk factor for early mortality, as it is associated with cognitive decline, depression, chronic diseases and dementia. Seniors exhibiting withdrawal, loss of interest in personal hygiene, poor nutrition or hoarding could be suffering from social isolation, according to AARP.
  • Self-neglect – Have you seen any signs that could indicate reduced independence, such as unwashed hair, stained clothes or unkempt fingernails or facial hair? Often older adults facing mobility issues and/or memory loss will show signs of neglected hygiene, as well as other parts of daily life that are hampered by mental and physical limitations. You may observe signs of weight loss or dehydration, poor medication management or important mail left unopened.
  • Concerning accidents – Do you feel your loved one could be clearheaded when experiencing an emergency like taking a fall, getting into a fender bender or having a medical scare at home? Before a more serious incident occurs, a move to assisted living can bring the reassurance of a 24-hour emergency response system and transportation for shopping and appointments.
