Senior Living in Rome, Georgia

Rome, Georgia: Berry College.

Founded in 1834, Rome has grown into a bustling city on seven hills surrounding three peaceful rivers that meet in the center of the downtown area. Rome has preserved its past through award-winning museums, developed dozens of trails for visitors to enjoy and crafted the perfect Southern atmosphere for you to fall in love with. Just minutes from the vibrant energy of the college campus and the cosmopolitan charms of downtown Rome, senior living at The Spires at Berry College renews the spirit and invigorates the mind. Residents have the unique opportunity to benefit from the excitement of campus life, while experiencing the freedom of their retirement years — alongside friendly folks from all over the country with diverse backgrounds and professions. And nothing compares to the assurance of a full continuum of healthcare available onsite if ever needed.

At The Spires, residents are surrounded by the pleasures of a learning environment at Berry College without the rigors of a curriculum. Sit in on classes, attend concerts, lectures, plays and sporting events — fully immerse yourself in the vitality of campus life. Just as importantly, the 27,000-acre preserve bequeathed to the college by Martha Berry provides ample room to reflect, explore and appreciate what life in retirement can and should be.

Founded in 1902, Berry College’s campus is one of the world’s largest college campuses. The campus, partially inspired by Oxford University’s Christ Church in England, is filled with century-old history and breathtaking buildings that have been featured in numerous Hollywood movies. Two notable spots to visit are the Ford Complex, funded by Henry Ford, which brings British grandeur to rural Georgia with its Neo-Gothic architecture. Also take time to enjoy the Mountain Campus, where you can enjoy picturesque pastures, lakes, log cabins, an old mill and hiking trails that lead to the House O’ Dreams — an impressive stone cottage on top of Lavender Mountain.

Explore the rich history of Berry College through the Greek Revival home of its founder, Martha Berry. Take a tour of this historic home, where you’ll learn about the Berry family and their vision for creating a four-year liberal arts college. Don’t miss the Oak Hill Colonial Revival Garden, designed and built in the late 1920s, offering a wonderful example of 20th-century landscaping trends.

Rome, Georgia: More Than a Bustling College Town.

No visit to Rome is complete without seeing two of its iconic landmarks: the Capitoline Wolf and the Rome Clocktower. The Capitoline Wolf, a bronze sculpture symbolizing the founding of Rome, stands proudly in front of City Hall. A few blocks away, the Clocktower offers one of the best views of the downtown area if you’re up for climbing its 107 steps.

Stroll through historic downtown Rome, where you’ll find Georgia’s largest Victorian-era district. Broad Street is a hub of activity, with charming restaurants, bakeries, specialty shops and art galleries. For live entertainment, check out the Desoto Theatre, now home to the Rome Little Theatre, which stages plays throughout the year and hosts the Rome International Film Festival.

If you enjoy outdoor activities, the 16-mile paved Coosa River Trail is a great way to experience Rome’s natural beauty. This multipurpose trail — perfect for walking, biking or jogging — connects several parks, attractions and landmarks. For a peaceful retreat, head to Kingston Downs, a sprawling 5,000-acre property offering a variety of lodging options, from cozy cottages to glamping tents. Enjoy activities like hiking, fishing, kayaking and mountain biking, or even try a guided hunt.
